    APRIL 2024 CALENDAR

Dates and emails are subject to change.

    THE FIRST 100 RELEASE PARTY!

As of tomorrow, April 2nd, The First 100 is no longer in Pre-Order or just an idea on my computer but you can hold it in your hands. I did the “math” and if all of you, my most loyal of subscribers, were to purchase just one copy of my book it would more than cover purchasing all the remaining 13 bookcases I need to possibly unbox all of my books for the first time in nearly a decade! Wow! Not that I’m in a rush to put together 13 bookcases all at once! But it would truly mean a lot and you could own the very first 100 stories I wrote when this crazy journey started back on May 1st, 2023!

Click the button below to order on Amazon US (but you can certainly find it on other online booksellers as well):

    100 WORD STORIES IN APRIL

This month in certain writing circles is “Poetry Month” and so I’m preparing to write 30 days worth of poems. Till now I’ve only written a few poems that were exactly 100 words so this will definitely be a challenge.

REMINDER: All previous 100 Word Stories are now in ARCHIVE for Paid Subscribers only.

    SLEIGHT OF HAND

As this is an email where I’m only allowed to look forward I will say that April will include two very special stories that I’m excited to share with you:

The first is a short story for paid subscribers only, The Private Lives of Hannah and Amelia. I give you a closer look at the two old biddies who travel to and from work in the carriage with Charisma and Flossie. I hope you enjoyed their brief appearance in Sleight of Hand because this is your chance to learn an important secret about them. [April 8th]

The second is a part of the “A History” portion of Wondermere and is free for everyone. I love writing these really short stories because it gives me a chance to share a bit of history with you that will hopefully convince you (if you aren’t already) to become a paid subscriber and get unfettered access. In this third installment I’m going to tell you the history of The Caretakers of the colosseum. Who are the Pomroy women and how exactly did they come to have such an important job as managing the colosseum? [April 22nd]

    ANATOMY OF TYPEWRITERS

With two stories down (I realize I neglected to release Part III and the Epilogue of Night Shift, but fret not, both are coming this week to catch-up). I seem to be getting more and more excited with each story I come up with to tell. As you know, each story will feature a typewriter in some way, hence the name of the anthology. In April I’m going to delve deeper into a scenario I’ve always been fascinated by; heredity.

A woman has just buried her father. If that wasn’t difficult enough, in his will he left her a letter explaining that she was adopted when she was just three months old and her birthmother left her a house. But it comes with conditions; she can never sell it, she can only leave it to her child (should she choose to have one). Why? What she uncovers in this home about the mother she never knew will shock her and make her question the rest of her life.

  • The Kid | A 100 Word Story

#336 King of Wands – Prince Inga

“Bring out the kid,” she clucked. We heard the rattling of chains, then a boy with shackles around his wrists and ankles appeared, led by two lizard guards.

“What’s the meaning of this? Where did you get him from?”

“Why is it your kind always ask the wrong questions. What you should be wondering is why we felt the need to chain him up. You’ll soon find out.” She gave the signal for the kid to be released, then returned to the safety of her cage.

The kid looked at us with hunger in his eyes and said, “I’m hungry.”

  • The February & March Episodes – A Discussion

I want to talk a bit about changes and pauses in my writing. I had hoped to release an episode weekly and I didn’t. The reason is quite simple: Something wasn’t right with the story. In hindsight, I wish I had discovered this glaring error much sooner than while I was in the thick of it, but we can’t always plan for these things.

I have since discovered what was wrong and made the necessary changes. But it has caused some complications to the story already written and to what is yet to come. I’m choosing to implement these changes from Episode 10 – forward, but for the first 9 episodes they will remain the same until I’ve finished Sleight of Hand and go back to do my “Red Pen Edit.”

    The problem?

    POV vs Main Character

I had it set in my head that my main character had to be Charisma (a name I am changing soon as well) and if I didn’t stick to that then the story just wouldn’t work. Well, it turns out, trying to force it wasn’t working. I created a world with far too many dynamic characters and what ended up happening is, Charisma became timid and quiet and very much “unseen” in the story where I had intended it to revolve around her. Her voice was lost.

    The Solution?

    Multiple POVs

I went back and realized that each episode was basically being told from the POV of a particular character in that episode, I just needed time to step back to not only realize that fact but to accept it.

So, I examined each episode and made some key decisions that should hopefully make the story flow much better, make more sense, and lift the burden I put upon myself that Charisma must be the main character. Sometimes, especially in epic fantasy (which is the genre I hope this will fall in, beside mystery).

To give you an example of how this will go moving forward, and a bit of a “first look” at the last episode of Part I, here is what the end result will likely be when the episodes are brought together into book form (coming Fall 2025):

By taking the character that is the main focal point of each episode and telling the story from their point of view, it will make for a far more interesting pacing, I think.

This is an opportunity for me to give you, the reader, a glimpse into the perspective of different people. It’s been done by many writers before me and I hope I do it right.

Where we are in the story?

If you remember, the story started with a strange man dropping dead in Charisma’s house. Her best friend and next door neighbor are now into it up to their neck, each with their own reasons for wanting to find out who he was, why he was on her doorstep, and most importantly, who killed him.

In episodes 6 through 9 we meet Jan, the owner of the oldest standing magicians shop in Wondermere. With Jan’s help they manage to get an invitation to perform magic for a chance to perform for the king in the colosseum. An opportunity only afforded to few. Their intention isn’t to perform at the colosseum, instead to retrieve a journal that was stolen from Felix’s flat.

This journal is believed to have been written by the stranger and belongs with the deck of cards that was given to Charisma by the stranger before he died.

    What’s coming?

In short, another murder, as you can guess by the 12th episode of Part I, Another Dead Body. Who it is and why might answer one burning question but will create even more questions.

Part II begins May. I’m taking April as a small break from the serial but don’t worry, you’ll get two special short stories to tide you over while I’m gone…

Please do, share your thoughts on the last four episodes? I enjoy any criticisms you may have (positive or negative). Keep in mind you are getting raw, rough, and unedited episodes, hot off the presses!

  • The Caged Bird | A 100 Word Story

#335 Queen of Wands – Billina the Hen

Her cage was massive. I have never seen a cage that large before. She ruffled her feathers and turned her head. Her beak poked through the bars.

“Why are you here?” Her question took us by surprise. Not because she was a large and plump chicken, but because she was trapped in a cage.

“You brought us here. We were just passing through.”

She cackled. No, clucked. “I can help you but you must tell me the truth.”

“What can a caged bird do?”

Suddenly, her cage door opened. It was then I wished I hadn’t opened my big mouth.

  • Pumpkin Head | A 100 Word Story

#334 Knight of Wands – Jack Pumpkinhead

It wasn’t long before we reached our destination. What was waiting for us on the platform was not what either of us were expecting. Which is saying a lot since we had just been kidnapped by a mosquito and rescued by a lizard.

“Is that a scarecrow with a pumpkin for a head?” She asked me.

“You flatter me, madam. I’m here to escort you to the castle.”

“And if we don’t want to?” I asked. Though secretly I wanted to.

The pumpkin head smiled. “Now, you don’t wanna go around saying something like that. You’ll hurt the queen’s feelings.”

  • Don't Trust the Chicken | A 100 Word Story

#333 Page of Wands – Scraps the Patchwork Girl

Suddenly, the train car was thrust into darkness and our new lizard friend was kicking butt. Turns out lizards move faster and fight better than I thought.

“Follow me,” the lizard whispered in my ear. I grabbed her hand and together we ran to the next car.

“Do you know where we’re headed?”

“Sorry kids, this is where I get off. Thanks for saving my life. They would’ve sold me for sure if you hadn’t set me free. Take my advice, whatever you do, don’t trust the chicken.” Before I could ask what he meant, he leapt from the train.

  • Are You a Faithful or a Traitor?

A look at every show I’ve seen haven’t seen.

This is a question my best friend of over three decades asked me the other day. For some context, he introduced me to the US version of The Traitors about a month ago and through little coaxing on my part, my wife is HOOKED! Dare I say it, as hooked as she is on Survivor, a show she would not miss ever!

    Who are The Traitors?

Take a group of people (reality celebrities or regular people) and put them in a house, give them missions to win money, but add a twist that they must find a small group of traitors amongst themselves. Usually it’s 2 – 3 traitors in a group of 20+ players. Those who are not secretly chosen to be a traitor are a faithful. Everyone’s job is to work together to add money to the prize pot. But while this is happening the traitors are “murdering” faithfuls every night and faithfuls are given the same opportunity to “banish” a player before nightfall in the hopes of getting rid of the traitors. Should even ONE traitor be amongst them in the end of the game they take ALL of the money. If the faithfuls manage to get all the traitors out then they split the money.

    WARNING:

If you have not seen this show but want to, STOP READING HERE as I fully intend on spilling spoilers throughout this review!

    The Traitors US

Season 1 I could tell was clearly a major test season. A mix of reality celebrities and regular people. A great idea in theory but horrible in practice. The reality stars are used to backstabbing and lying and playing the traitor game while the regular people just aren’t and therefore take things a bit too personal. I’d say the show learned a lot after the first season when the winner ended up crushing the very souls of those who came up losing. If you’ve never seen Survivor before then you may not be familiar with Cirie. She was pretty bad ass on that show and even more on The Traitors as a traitor. She played everybody and got away with it right up until the end when the two faithfuls, and non-reality players, were left to realize just how duped they were. It really was a masterful game played even if the non-reality players took it way too seriously and were hurt by all the lies.

But The Traitors is ALL about the lies, and the drama, so when it came to Season 2, the US decided to do away with bringing on regular people and doubled down on reality tv celebrities. My wife and I both felt like our minds had melted from all the absolute and utter drama that came out of that second season. It was a lot to take in but like every other reality television show, the editing was marvelous. It kept us coming back for more each time to the point where we were watching two and three episodes a night to fast track out way through it. This season actually ended in a pretty, I feel, shitty way. It took a turn that I saw coming about halfway through and in many ways it made me see why maybe having an all reality show cast might not make for the best television. I see why they chose this route, it brings the eyeballs, but wait till we get to the other countries. I think they prove that reality tv isn’t everything.

I want to say one last note about the host of this show. It is filmed at Ardross Castle, a 19th-century castle in the Scottish Highlands, and the host is none other than Alan Cumming. Best known for broadway performances and I loved him in The Good Wife. He’s brilliant. He’s over the top. His fashion is beyond reproach. I look to him as the ultimate Traitor host but I’m trying to be open-minded when it comes to the different personalities of the other hosts as well.

    The Traitors UK

Now, my wife and I are right at the end of Season 1, with just one episode left to see who the winner(s) will be. The first and most obvious thing up front is that the players are all regular people. Sure, there is one actress, dear, sweet, Maddy. It took me a really long time to find her IMDb page but yes, I can confirm she was a homeless person in East Enders. Anyway, watching this season, and maybe it’s just because they’re all British, I am finding the fact that they are all regular people refreshing. A great palette cleanser after the non-stop drama of Season 2 of The Traitors US. It changed nothing about the way the game is played except for the strategizing that the traitors did together. I appreciated how they truly worked together, up to a point, and weren’t trying to back stab each other from the start.

Something else I found interesting is that all of the challenges were the same from The Traitors US. When we realized this we both weren’t sure how we’d feel but in all honesty, I started to get excited about it cause I knew the challenge and couldn’t wait to see how this group would handle them. Because each season will be an entirely different group of people I wouldn’t be mad if Season 2 and 3 reused the same challenges. I also suspect they did this for budgetary reasons but now that the show is growing in popularity they will be able to expand and introduce brand new challenges for each country that we haven’t seen.

Having not watched the end of Season 1 I hope the traitor(s) don’t win. My favorite player, a traitor, was just thrown under the bus by their fellow traitor and I’m gutted. Emotions are raw in my mind at how it all went down. Yes, Will played and is playing a great game. But Amanda was my girl and she deserved to shock them all and be there in the end.

About the host. Claudia Winkleman is best known for Strictly Come Dancing which she has been a part of since 2010. If I’m being honest, I’ve never watched the show so I can’t speak to her personality there. In the beginning I was indifferent towards her rather stoic personality. I couldn’t read her quite as well because she seems to always have a rather straight face on. Then I realized I was comparing her to Alan Cumming and that just isn’t fair to her. I am starting to warm to her as the game continues and now that we are one away she is truly bad ass and I can’t wait to see her in Season 2.

The Traitors Australia, NZ & Canada

I am putting all three of these together because I haven’t gotten to watch them yet. But my wife and I have every intention of getting through them as we kill time till the next season of The Traitors US returns in 2025. I’m most excited for each one for so many different reasons:

Australia for their accents. I just love a great Aussie accent, don’t you? And I believe this show takes place in a creepy large hotel rather than a castle like the others.

NZ for their vulgarity. I thought the UK was vulgar after watching The Taskmaster. But then we watched The Taskmaster NZ and realized the original is pretty clean and tame in comparison. So bring on the cursing shenanigans NZ. I know you won’t disappoint.

Canada will introduce another female host of the show so that should be exciting. I’m also looking forward to one of the reality show celebrities that will be in their first season, a previous winner of Survivor. I’m not sure if the first season mimics that of The Traitors US season one where it’s a mix of reality show and regular people.

    AM I A TRAITOR OR A FAITHFUL?

You didn’t think I’d write all this up without answering the damn question in the end did you? I wouldn’t do that!

My instinct was to say “I am a traitor” but then I had a good long think to myself. What I love most about all the mystery books and tv shows I watch isn’t the villian but the person who is solving the crime. Putting together the clues to uncover who the murderer is.

So, while the idea of being a traitor is intriguing, I have to be honest and say, “I AM A FAITHFUL,” with a caveat…

Should the traitors find themselves one man/woman down, and I am asked to join their ranks? Oh, I would, in a heartbeat!

Make of that answer what you will…

Now, I throw the ball back in your court…

ARE YOU A TRAITOR OR A FAITHFUL?

  • Break Free | A 100 Word Story

#332 X of Wands – Bill the Lizard

While the mosquito chattered away, I looked around for something I could use to break one of the crates. I had a feeling whatever was inside would be distracting enough to help us escape.

I jumped up, grabbed the chair I sat on and hurled it at one of the crates. They both shattered on impact to reveal a lizard wearing glasses, reading a book.

He lowered his glasses, stared me straight in the eyes and asked, “Is this a case of emergency situation?” I can’t remember what I said. All I knew was I had talked to a lizard!

  • In Case of Emergency | A 100 Word Story

#331 IX of Wands – The White Knight

Trapped on a train with no idea of its destination. A rather large mosquito for company. And an unfinished map leading to a promise of something unlike anything we could ever imagine.

If there was ever a time for me to step up and take control of the situation, it was now. I smiled innocently while I looked around for a means of escape. There was one window with bars on the outside and a door at either end, both blocked by large crates with air holes.

Painted in red, on each, were the words “Break in case of emergency.”
